Eagle Protect Discontinues Vinyl Glove Sales Due to Food Safety Risks
Back in 2018, Eagle Protect decided to discontinue selling vinyl (PVC) gloves due to growing scientific evidence of their toxic effects. The heavy chlorine content in PVC causes dioxins to be released into the surrounding atmosphere during manufacturing, burning, or landfilling of PVC, which can cause reproductive, developmental, and other health problems. Moreover, vinyl gloves can contain phthalates that can leach into the human body and food, especially fatty food, and some phthalates are known to cause adverse impacts on human health and are on the Prop 65 list of chemicals in California. Studies have also shown that vinyl gloves have an increased permeability to bacteria and virus, and in some cases, begin leaking as soon as they are donned, being an ineffective barrier in food handling with three times the cross - contamination potential of quality nitrile gloves.
